WHAT we do
Project Description:
Cincinnati PC Users Group's Hardware Special Interest Group has worked in
facilities provided by Technology Assisting People In Need for nearly six years.
TAPIN, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) charitable organization, collects donated computers
and peripheral equipment from businesses, etc.; cleans, repairs and upgrades the
equipment; and gives it to deserving individuals who cannot afford to purchase
the computers they need, to handicapped persons, and to social service agencies
which assist them. How do we select recipients?
Upon initial contact, we mail to the potential recipient: 1) a letter describing
the request process, 2) a brochure describing TAPIN's operations, and 3)
Guidelines on how to submit a request. TAPIN uses the requester's letter to
determine the need, and how to configure the computer. TAPIN uses the
organization's supporting letter to confirm the need.
How we will use award money:
TAPIN needs to purchase parts for the computers refurbishes, such as modems, sound cards, and software, and miscellaneous tools and testing instruments.
TAPIN is being forced to move its workshop, classroom, and office. CPCUG would use the award as seed money for a TAPIN building fund. TAPIN provides a place for:
- CPCUG Hardware SIG to refurbish computers every Friday and Saturday,
- CPCUG Board of Directors meeting twice a month,
- CPCUG "One Night Stand" educational series monthly,
- CPCUG Windows SIG, Linux SIG, and Digital Imaging SIG each meet monthly.
