WHAT we do
Project Description:
Project PC ReNew distributes in the Lower Hudson Valley to non-profit organizations.
These agencies submit applications for individuals; the requests are reviewed by a committee of RPCUG volunteers to approve distribution.
- The PC Renew project of the Rockland PC Users Group rebuilds and distributes
personal computers without charge to people that cannot afford them, from
students to the elderly, and introduce them to the world of personal computing.
- Reduce hazardous waste that would have occurred if the computers were disposed
of as scrap
- Donated personal computers, monitors, and peripheral equipment are collected
from companies, individuals, and the hazardous waste site in Rockland County.
- Volunteer technicians, trained by RPCUG members, rebuild the computer by
checking the all of the components for functionality.
- Defective components are replaced, the hard drive is wiped clean, and "Windows
98 SE" is loaded onto the hard drive.
- Word processing, spreadsheet program, and anti-virus software are installed
and tested.
- The remanufactured computer is inspected and tested by another set of RPCUG
trained volunteers.
- Completed computers with monitor, keyboard, and mouse are distributed to needy
individuals and organizations that have applied for them.
- Costs per computer equal approximately $38.00
- Continue to refurbish and distribute approximately 250 computers per year.
How we will use award money:
Award winnings will be used to buy modems and other components required to
