WHAT we do
Project Description:
For many years, TLCUG has been conducting weekly classes at the Baxter County
Library community room. Classes are well attended and are in demand among
members and non-members. Class instructors are TLCUG members who donate their
time and expertise in preparing the lectures. The classes are presented
professionally using state of the art equipment and software, and are provided
free to the community.
Class content is primarily aimed at novice users to assist them in getting
control of their computer. Subjects such as Desktop Management, Files and
Folders, Maintaining Your Computer, Email 1 & 2, Microsoft Internet Explorer,
Internet and Email, MS Word 2000 Basic, American Greetings Card Creatacard, MS
Works-Spreadsheet, MS Works Suite-Word Processor, and many other subjects have
been presented. Each class is followed by a question and answer period to
address individual concerns. (See exhibits 1 thru 9 as examples of Class format,
content, and handouts.)
A cadre of instructors splits the instructing duties among them based on
knowledge of the subject, personal experience, previous instruction training,
education, and availability. Each instructor prepares a class outline, delivery
aids, and handout material as required.
Class space is provided by the Library to TLCUG in exchange for providing the
volunteer computer monitors. The class schedule and content are posted at the
library, on the TLCUG Web site, the newspaper calendar of events, KTLO radio,
and on Cox cable TV. An email is sent to each member and announced at the
monthly TLCUG meeting.
How we will use award money:
The Twin Lakes Computer Users Group will continue to provide educational classes
and projects for members and non-members of our community. Funding for the
following needs will be a major use for Jerry Award money: continuing
maintenance and updating teaching equipment plus the addition of new components
necessary to demonstrate advancing technology such as wireless networking and
digital photography.
Some money will also be used to purchase books in order to provide resource
material for members and mentors. Ultimately these books will be donated to the
Baxter County Library's computer reference department.
Part of the money would be used for the purchase of components to help rebuild
and refurbish older computers and equipment which will then be donated to local
community non-profit organizations and indigent or handicapped individuals.
