WHAT we do
Project Description:
When members acquire a new computer, they often donate the older components to
TLCUG to be refurbished and distributed to needy individuals or non-profit
groups. Additionally, when TLCUG updates its own equipment, replaced items are
also distributed to the community.
This year, TLCUG provided many items to the community including two computers to
the Twin Lakes Literacy Council, one for their Mountain Home facility and the
second for their Yellville branch. These will be used for student education and
instructor training in new methods and techniques. (See the Baxter Bulletin
press release #1.) A third special computer was given to an individual
recovering from a stroke and doing remedial home speech therapy rehabilitation
using word recognition and virtual speech computer generation capability.
Additional computers were donated to the Rae Valley Volunteer Fire Department
(See News release #2) to facilitate scheduling manpower usage, track individual
member training status, and manage budgets and funds.
The TLCUG were able to replace two wall projectors with more powerful, state of
the art units. The older replaced projectors were donated to the Twin Lake
Literacy Council and to the Van Matre Senior Center with the proviso that these
units will also be made available for use by other local non-profit civic
organizations such as the Boy and Girl Scouts, the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, and
the Children's Miracle Network. (See press release #4 and 5 attached)
How we will use award money:
The Twin Lakes Computer Users Group will continue to provide educational classes
and projects for members and non-members of our community. Funding for the
following needs will be a major use for Jerry Award money: continuing
maintenance and updating teaching equipment plus the addition of new components
necessary to demonstrate advancing technology such as wireless networking and
digital photography.
Some money will also be used to purchase books in order to provide resource
material for members and mentors. Ultimately these books will be donated to the
Baxter County Library's computer reference department.
Part of the money would be used for the purchase of components to help rebuild
and refurbish older computers and equipment which will then be donated to local
community non-profit organizations and indigent or handicapped individuals.
Finally, the Jerry Award money will be spent serving the needs of the TLCUG's
members and our community following the goals and requirements of APCUG.
